These are the traditional farmhouse of Gallura, the historical region in the north east of Sardinia.
In the local dialect, the Gallurese,  it is known as “Lu Stazzu, such rural dwellings are found both in northern Sardinia and in the Island of Corse as well as in other southern regions of Italy.

The word stazzo comes from the Latin “statio,” “a place to rest”: the stazzi were therefore shelters and homes of Gallura shepherds and farmers.

In the Barbagia region (central east Sardinia) such dwellings are known as Su Pinnettu, a temporary shelter used by the shepherds during the transhumance. The stazzi is distinguished by granite masonry that reflects the stationary nature of such building within which families used to live all year round. The oldest stazzi date back to the 18th century, when Corsicans settled in Sardinia.

Stazzo Architecture

The Traditional Stazzo in Sardinia was built from blocks of rough granite stone, abundantly available in the surroundings, topped by a double-pitched roof whose main beam was usually made of local juniper or chestnut wood.

The farmhouse would usually be exposed towards south-east to get most of the sun. These Sardinia stone cottages often consisted of a single room that would serve as kitchen (with complementary fireplace), dining room and bedroom all together. Outside there was a wood oven to bake the bread and roast meat.

If few stazzi were built within close vicinity to each other such that several families could run their own farm, a “cussogghja”, rural settlement, was then established.
